The last year has been a watershed one for Kitley House Hotel. The manor house started life some 500 years ago as the ancestral home of relatives of the Bastard family, who took over its management again in early summer 2018 after several decades during which the hotel was run by different operators.
New owner Spike Bastard has embarked on a thorough programme to sensitively restore and renovate the Grade-One-listed building, where he spent holidays as a child. Work started on the outside and then progressed through the public rooms. Even the kitchen has benefitted from new fittings. The hotel has been given a new lease of life and is now a four-star establishment with an AA Rosette.
The first thing to be improved was the mile of driveway leading all the way to Kitley’s grand front porch from the main road through the village of Yealmpton. Now a smooth ride, this charming private road offers our guests their first glimpse of the 600-acre wooded estate surrounding the hotel.
Next up, a clean and polish for the front facade. Years of grime have been cleaned from the blackened stonework to reveal the silvery-grey colour of the original marble, quarried right here on the estate.
Inside, original architectural features have been painstakingly restored by craftsmen. The main reception rooms have been refreshed and updated with a dominant palette of soft blue-greys and greens with occasional pops of stronger colours: ochre yellow in The Library and bold, dark blue walls, accented with warm orange furnishings, in the Drawing Room. We hope you’ll agree that the overall effect is of a building that’s once more feeling the love!
The redecoration has recently moved upstairs to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Regardless of their size or grandeur, all of our guest accommodation is being updated with classic fixtures and fittings, befitting a house with such a long and rich history.
You may detect a quiet undercurrent of activity as this refurbishment continues. Rest assured, we’re doing our very best to minimise the impact of the work on our guests. We hope you enjoy your stay and are minded to return to see what changes we have in store in the months and years to come.
