Top Devon chefs Peter Gorton, Master Chef of Great Britain, and Jim Fisher of Exeter Cookery School demonstrated their skills at Kitley House Hotel at the end of June. They joined their peers in hospitality and catering, including Kitley’s newly-appointed Head Chef, Matt Dell, to stage a highly inspirational culinary day and pass on their wisdom to aspiring students from South Devon College and City College Plymouth.

 

The special event, organised by The Chefs’ Forum, offered inspiring barbeque demonstrations and a great networking opportunity for hospitality professionals from Devon and neighbouring counties. Chefs’ Forum events build students’ confidence and break down barriers between top local employers and the next generation of hospitality professionals.

 

City College Plymouth student Paige Pawley has been offered a trial at Kitley based on her excellent performance on the day. If successful, The Chefs’ Forum Educational Foundation will fund her first month’s travel to work.

 

Kitley’s Business Development Manager, Laura Goodchild, said: “We were delighted to host The Chefs’ Forum and it’s fantastic that our new chef, Matt Dell, could be part of this food and drink event.  Completely unphased by twenty young chefs joining him in his brand-new kitchen, Matt really enjoyed the opportunity to work with two local colleges, forging relationships that will continue into the future, with one learner being offered a trial shift at Kitley. A great result.”

 

In their welcome speeches, Kitley House PR Sharon Goble gave an insight into the recent restoration and refurbishment of the listed building and Chefs’ Forum Founder, Catherine Farinha, spoke about the Foundation’s role in bridging the gap between education and industry.

 

TV Chef Ben Forte mentored South Devon College students Dylan Roberts and Daniel Chichro, giving them a day’s masterclass of live fire cooking on two Kamado Joe ceramic grills. The young chefs relished the opportunity and contributed to a delicious outdoor feast for all the attendees.

 

Jim Fisher rounded off the day with a fantastic chocolate-making demonstration, producing colourful chocolate bonbons for guests to sample. Needless to say, there were no left-overs!
