Local people we love to work with
The Kitley Estate has long played an important part in the life of the local community. Being back in family hands marks the start of an exciting new chapter in the history of the hotel.
As a tourism and hospitality business, we want to continue to play an active role in our local community and ensure that the money we generate supports Devon’s economy. That’s why we choose to use local suppliers and service providers and forge lasting relationships with the people, charities and organisations that make this part of Devon so special.
By sourcing our food as locally as possible, including from the estate itself, we make sure our ingredients are fresh, traceable and travel the minimum number of miles from field to plate.
This page showcases members of our own team and some of the many suppliers and partners we work with – from the craftspeople who are helping us with our ongoing restoration to the food producers who add that extra ingredient to our menus.
We hope you’ll enjoy finding out all about them.
The Real Pig Company
We are very fortunate to have one of the best producers of free-range, rare-breed pork right here on the Kitley estate and we use it daily on our menus. In fact, The Real Pig Company produces such succulent pork that ‘Country Life’ food writer Tom Parker-Bowles recently included it in his Top 10 favourite suppliers of rare-breed meat in the UK. Quite an accolade!
The Real Pig Company is a proper family affair spanning three generations, run by Sonia Blackmore-Matthews and Adrian Matthews with help from their young sons and their grandfather. Adrian says, “Pigs are highly-intelligent, inquisitive and sociable animals and that’s why we let ours live in a relaxed and healthy environment, so they produce first-rate pork”.
The pigs live in small family groups in the woods on the Kitley estate, where they can sprint and squeal to their heart’s content, free to roam and forage. These farming methods herald a return to traditional, age-old values, which focus on animal welfare and the quality of the pork produced. The animals are all pedigree-registered, rare breeds including Gloucester Old Spots, Saddlebacks, Oxford Sandy & Blacks and, more recent additions, Dorocs.
Sonia sums up the values of The Real Pig Company; “We think life is complicated enough, so that’s why we decided to rear our pigs in a traditional way with animal welfare at the forefront of everything we do.”
The farm now supplies free-range duck and chicken too, reared by Ed and Harry Matthews, and used in our kitchen for our guests to enjoy.
Also at Kitley…
Fresh food prepared by our chef and his team, using local ingredients, many from our own estate. Try our new à la carte menu for dinner, a bar-style lunch or indulge in a cream tea on the terrace.
Whatever your business needs, let us make your event a success. Kitley House is the perfect choice for meetings, conferences and residential courses with flexible rooms catering for up to 100 people.
We found Kitley House to be a gem hidden away within acres of woodland just waiting to be explored. The house is full of historic charm and the rooms and service were faultless. Worth the drive from London and will be returning.

The last time we stayed at Kitley House it was excellent. Service, food, entertainment - All First Class!
Kitley has a very different feel to it now. It is cosier and visibly more cared for now that it is a family run hotel. The staff are still as friendly as they have ever been but the place itself now appears to be being loved.
