The tour begins with the shields mounted above the entrance doorway, and moves
around the walls in a clockwise direction, the notes examining each shield
in sequence. Each new entry opens with the blazon of the arms displayed, given
in italics, and the names of the families represented, with the sketch of
the shield alongside. Then follows some outline notes on the families, with
relevant genealogical details where know, also indicating the significance
of the arms to the Bastard pedigree, referring to the other shields where
appropriate. For ease of cross-referencing, each shield is numbered, which
numbers also tie in to the outline heraldic “tree” which shows
the positions of all the shields in relation to each other in the pedigree.
