Or a chevron azure Impaling Or a chevron sable in the chief two cinquefoils
of the second in the point a star of the second – Bastard impaling KillioweJoseph Bastard of Dulo, Cornwall, married Ann, daughter and heiress of John
Killiowe, c1590. The son of John Bastard (q.v. shield 33), Joseph Bastard
moved to Cornwall but later established the family at Gerston and West Alvington,
and it was from him that the main Bastard line, those who were to later take
up residence at Kitley, descended. However, it is likely that his brother
William might in fact have already been at Gerston during these years, and
was perhaps himself Lord of the Manor, having inherited the Estate from their
father, for it was William Bastard, rather than Joseph, who is known to have
purchased the Manor of Buckland in the Moor from Raphe Woodleigh in 1614,
which suggest that it was William Bastard who held the main Devonian family
fortunes at the time and thus, by inference, the Gerston estate. Aside from
the fact that William Bastard was MP for Dartmouth 1601 and Reader of the
Middle Temple, all that is known a about him is that he married an Elizabeth
but had no children by her. Her surname has not been found, but the marriage
is possibly depicted in one of the Bastard impalements at Kitley which as
yet remain unidentified – although, as has already been suggested, these
four shields (q.v. shields 26,28,30 & 31) probably denote marriages from
much earlier periods. Joseph Bastard died in 1633, and his brother William
in 1639 (q.v. shield 39).
