argent – Bastard impaling GilbertThis is the earliest Bastard impalement which has been firmly identified
through the consultation of documentary and published sources, that of John
Bastard, son and heir of John Bastard, grandson of Thomas Bastard of Efford,
to Thomasine, daughter of Otes (in some sources named as Geoffrey) Gilbert,
sometime in the mid sixteenth century. John Bastard died in 1589 and was buried
at West Alvington, which suggest a longer association with that district than
is clear from any documents which have been found to name Bastard owned properties
there (q.v. shields 26 & 27)
