William Bastard’s eldest son, John, baptised at Yealmpton on 19th Sept 1756, married Sarah, the widow of xxxxx Wymondesold of Lockinge, Berkshire, through whom he inherited estates in that country. Following her death he remarried, to Judith Ann, daughter of Samuel Martin (the impalement not shown). In 1799 William Bastard prevented the destruction of the Plymouth dockyard by a suggen revolt amongst the workmen. Without waiting for a requisition, he marched his own regiment against the insurgents and brought the rioting to an end. He was also MP for Devon from 1784 until his death. He died in Italy in 1816, following which event his remains were brought home in a man-o-war and interred in the family vault at Yealmpton church. 5,000 people are said to have attended the funeral. He had no children, and so after his death the Lordship passed to his brother, Edmund (q.v shield 21).
