Animals and Fish
Feathered News Our resident pair of swans lost all but one the cygnets last year. Last year we had 3 cygnets hatched which should be a little more manageable for the parents!. However once they were of a reasonable size the parents flew away leaving the cygnets to care for themselves. This they have managed to do and are growing well. A new dovecote has been added to the rear gardens with delivery of the doves - I am sure the Sparrowhawks appreciated the guesture - they took the new doves within 2 weeks! Seen from the bar recently the Kingfishers obviously have a brood and are using the swans nest as a base for fishing adventures. Also seen in the back garden in the Autumn were both types of Woodpecker and our resident Barn Owls. Fishy News Following the works to the river and lake last year there has been some vegetation growth with fish numbers picking up again. There was a large number of fry in October in evidence in the River as well as the lake. The mullet have been taking advantage of the new lake extension with hundreds swimming close to the hotel this month. The dace seem to have taken over the silt pond with a fair sized shoal in evidence. The Otters appreciate the improvement in fish stocks and are regularly seen early in the morning close to the hotel. Indeed they even left a 2 pound Brown Trout for us recently. The Brown Trout are now seen in both the stream and the lake with fish to over 3 pounds in evidence.
